Departement of Humanities(History and Geography)
The need for this program has been identified and approved by the Board of Directors of the institution. They have taken consideration of the specified needs of the Secondary Education sector in Rwandaand specifically of the Western province of Rwanda. There is a critical need to develop expertise in teaching of each humanities, including economics and entrepreneurship to meet needs of secondary schools.
In addition this program will develop expertise in pedagogy and humanities subjects which may be applied outside secondary education – as subject experts, researchers, economists, trainers, and entrepreneurs.
The program will prepare some students to take higher degrees in this domain, in taught Masters and in research degrees, expanding both the pedagogical and subject expertise.
It is also critical that graduates from this domain remain in the Province after graduating, hence the importance of running this program at Kibogora Polytechnic. Graduates will be the change agents, the young teachers with appreciation of modern teaching and learning approaches, clear vision and expertise who can carry forward the secondary schools of the region to international standards of excellence. They are also the prime source of entrepreneurial endeavour, setting up the new businesses on which the future growth of the region depends, and all the service industries which will support these primary endeavours. There is unlikely to be any significant shortage of job opportunities for graduates from the program. Some forward-looking employers will take the opportunity of filling professional roles with graduates rather than lower skilled individuals for the enhancement of their organisation. The net benefit to growth in the region will be the clear indicator of the success of this program.
The design of the program has been informed by best international practice. The program is planned with a core of generic and pedagogic material together with a range of four humanities options:-
Two options will be taken by each student. While the options Geography + History (as already approved) and Economics + Entrepreneurship are likely to be the most popular (reflecting current streams in secondary schools) there is no difficulty in taking any other combination if the subjects can be timetabled. This will depend on demand which will in turn depend on vocational opportunities.
Therefore a student program will have the following shape:
Award Type: Bachelor of Education/Diploma in Education (Secondary) in [options]
Level: Undergraduate Honours

Delivery Method: Standard
