Biomedical Laboratory

Medical Laboratory Science is concerned with the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease using analytical methods in the clinical laboratory.

Medical Laboratory Science is a field that provides professional expertise in laboratory based techniques. Members of this profession are responsible for the provision of valid and reliable laboratory based information on which crucial decisions affecting public health are based. These include monitoring, diagnosis, therapy, and food quality and policy issues. Thus, the inception of this degree program is of crucial importance to enhance practical laboratory skills, services and intellectual development of future students. Both public and private health care industry relies heavily on biomedical laboratory results in their curative, preventive and research undertakings. Currently, the national health care sector is facing an enormous shortage of qualifies medical laboratory professionals. Hence, this program is overdue in addressing the current shortage of these cadres in a bid to build a robust national health care system that responds to both national and regional community.

Laboratory science students who successfully complete this program will be equipped enough to practice safely, competently and effectively in laboratories in the health service and other industries, meeting an acute shortage of scientists qualified to national and international standards of laboratory practice.
