MANAGEMENT EDUCATION THROUGH FIELD PRACTICES

Management is essential for the socio-economic development all society around the world , because Efficient management leads to better economical production which helps in turn to increase the welfare of people. Students in the Department of Business and Development Studies learned the theories of management that are essentials in order to apply them to the field in different organizations. To know the application of the theories learned, the department organized a trip for this end.

Students in the Department of Business and Development Studies learned the theories of management that are essentials in order to apply them to the field in different organizations. To know the application of the theories learned, the department organized a trip for this end.

November 2017 in Shagasha Tea Company Ltd based in Giheke Sector, Rusizi District, Western Province of Rwanda.

THE OBJECTIVES OF THE TRIP WERE:

  1. To let the students observe and learn the process of managing a manufacturing company in the profitable way;
  2. To let the students interact with Departmental managers in this companies in order to clarify  their queries;
  3. To describe the management of Shagasha Tea Company and learn from their best practices.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

  1. To achieve the first objective of the trip, the Head of production explained first the structure of the company as well as responsibilities assigned to different department there. He explained that they are carrying out their responsibilities in complementarity between departments to get their job done well.
  2. To achieve the second objective of the trip different head of department explained their functions as regards planning, organization, staffing, coordination and control of their activities. Here they show how production process is planned and how it is monitored from the first stage of tea reception up to the last stage of delivering to the customers whereby a series of specialized activities are done to preserve the quality of the final products; they explained also staff planning and how to motivate them and retain them while monitoring and ensure strong control of their activities; They showed also how they highlighted the selling activities.
  3. To achieve the third objective of the trip, the students offered opportunity to ask questions about the field experiences and their questions were answered.  The summary of the lesson learned were quoted in the following passage.

QUOTES FROM THE STUDENTS REGARDING THE LESSON LEARNED FROM THIS FIELD TRIP

  • This field visit helped to understand how different organs are linked within a manufacturing company ;
  • The field visits clarified management principles learned so far such as division of work, employees motivation; and also the management of working environment.
  • It helped to know how to protect the business organization against regulators’ punishments, and also to understand socio-economic  impact  of producing the products which meet the required standards.
  • It helped to understand how good planning accompanied with clear organization facilitate the management job to be easy for managers and contribute to the development of the business.
  • It helped to understand the concept “time management” and the implication it has on the overall production of the company whereby even a short time delay of not monitoring correctly the production in process can make the company to loose a lot of money in case high quality products might become useless, once they spendin more time in production more than the required time.
  • It helped to know that managers are not only managing operations and workers, I noticed that they have also to managers all stakeholders including the owners by taking care of their interests in a profitable way for the company.
  • It helped to know that management is not only  done within the company and also beyond company’s location, because the company’s market have to be managed as well as suppliers, the whole channel of selling must be well managed by the companies managers.
  • The field trip helped to understand the contribution of computerizing reporting activities  in term of proving higher production within a short time.
  • It helped to know how to manage big budgets.
  • It helped to understand that safe working place is a good motivation for employees to be more productive.
  • It helped to understand the danger of supplying the products that are different from the sample submitted and accepted by customers.
  • It helped to know that  the risk associated to the failure of making regular control because trusting 100% the information from the workers might lead the company into substantial loss.
  • This Field Trip were very helpful;  Thank you KP, thank you BDS, for this trip because it helped to understand that Good management makes a difficult task easier by avoiding wastage of scarce resource, It improves standard of living and  It increases the profit which is beneficial to the business and country in general.
